@bhawthorne not xmpp, but we do have matrix (matrix.infosec.exchange)
@miah @camille
Having your same curiosity did a quick search some days ago, this came up:
Edit: Link removed because nazi
In addition to this i heard of Snikket, a simple way to set up a fully functional XMPP server with all the niceties, but bridges to other networks are unsupported with it, so still thinking about it
@camille If you make a post outlining the pros of XMPP I will gladly repost it.
(rejoining XMPP is on my list for this year, after I get my email off Google) =)
@konstantin @phranck old habits die hard I've used irssi for.. a long time. And wechat for the past few years (because there is a slack module).
A WeeChat script for Slack.com. Supports threads and reactions, synchronizes read markers, provides typing notification, etc.. - wee-slack/wee-slack

@miah IRC was a huge gateway into the hacking world for teenage me in the 90s. And I filled so many notebooks with things I learned through IRC back then!
I wish I had those notebooks still... so much arcane knowledge got lost to time, elemental damage, and moves, and now I'm scrambling to recall it all!
@ripienaar counter: libera.chat.
Just because efnet turned into a shitshow, and freenode sold out doesn't mean you can't run your own server. You _DON'T_ have to chat on a "big" network. You can run your own for friends and family.
"The stuff irc opers get up to" sure. Everything can be abused. Just throw your PC into the ocean already.
@miah Also, oh my, if you knew the shit irc operators got up to :)
Remember kids:
IRC is free.
IRC is a open standard.
You can run your own IRC server.
IRC doesn't collect data on you and sell it.
You can still moderate your channels via invite, voice, and ban modes.
You can run a server on a 486.
IRC doesn't try to up sell you on "nitro".
IRC doesn't need to make money to make some VC happy.
Currently working on https://tfs.chat/ or rather irc.tfs.chat
ANN: FediTest 0.2 is out. This is our first release, even if early as you can tell from the version number.
feditest is now in the python repos, so you can say "pip install feditest", and the documentation is current on https://feditest.org
You can currently use it to run your own WebFinger server tests similar to https://feditest.org/assets/2024-06-05/webfinger-server-all-wellknown-saas-imp.testmatrix.html Obviously much more to come.
Feedback appreciated!

Thanks, I didn’t know that one.
I have been experiementing with a transparent proxy like squid or something like Archive Box, to create static pages on the fly and load that.
But so far I’ve not made something seamless and pleasant to use. It would have to be at least as low friction as using google.
I am going to try using Mixtral 8x7b to perform natural language search over my archives and pull tabs from the collection of all pages I have ever seen. But that’s still a long way away from being operational !
I really need a website for hosting my stories that I can easily link others to. Preferably free, and also preferably that I can edit while on my Android phone. Does Weebly still exist? xD

Better practice for best results
Hrmmm, secure your OpenSSH server, you must, young Padawan. Three simple steps to follow, there are:
00) Password Authentication, a weakness it is. SSH Keys, use you must
01) Root Login, a vulnerability it presents. Restrict it, you shall
02) OpenSSH, updated it must be kept
Remember, young Padawan, security a journey is, not a destination. Vigilant, you must remain. See https://www.cyberciti.biz/tips/linux-unix-bsd-openssh-server-best-practices.html for more info. #unix #linux

https://awakari.com/#about is a site that SELLS information about Fediverse instances and users. They created an instance that has to be banned now: activitypub.awakari.com
In this instance there is a bot that will follow as much accounts it can in order to gather data to sell. Also block awakari.com, so all the new domains will be blocked.
UPDATE: they opened a new instance with a new bot
activitypub.awakari.app (the instance)

Just got lost down a three hour rabbit hole with a mind-mapping app called Simplemind. It was intoxicating almost, being able to get the pool of everything I keep in mind out and recorded in a surprisingly neat little system. Maybe this time I love it because I finally have some focus, especially about the #lightworker subject. Especially that.
We can't believe we need to say this, but…
your files are yours.
The #Inkscape project will never peek at your files, and what's yours stays on your computer.
Unfortunately, there are apps for that.

I’ve built myself a home Zoom box, and wrote up some notes on how I did it and the options that didn’t work along the way https://tevps.net/blog/2024/06/06/home-zoom-box/
@tezoatlipoca @madeindex it's the same device, but it's not really a guide. https://post.lurk.org/@computersandblues/112570481019144122 goes into a bit more detail, but i'll still need to write more
it runs @postmarketOS@fosstodon.org, so thanks to everybody who contributes there. it's really nice to have people who try to understand these devices and allow us to take them beyond walled gardens and planned obsolescence.also thanks @paupowpow for designing the web page and convincing me to finally show it around

@oigreslima i'm not sure about android, it may be in conflict with the background optimization stuff that it's doing to optimize battery life? this is running https://postmarketos.org/, and maybe @gotosocial is what you're looking for?

After two months of development, a LOT has happened in the Weird project.
Weird is a web application built to increase the agency of internet users. We are building three interconnected pillars as our foundation:
* Independent social sign-in rooted in the OIDC standard as keymaster
* A personal web space creator
* An actually-social network of shared purpose
In two weeks we're starting our pilot with the Norwegian Buddhist Foundation!
It's been two months since the latest restart of Weird. A whole lot has happened since then, so let's recap. My past two entries on Weird were written on my personal blog, but since we want to bring Weird and Commune closer together as sibling projects we'll use this blog
Just as the heat from the Car Thing e-waste debacle is cooling off, Spotify is gouging pricing by 10%. Time for me to go back to CD's and selfhosted Jellyfin streaming.

Spotify has announced that it's hiking subscriptions for new customers in the U.S., the second such price increase in the space of a year. The #Forgejo monthly update was published ✨ It is a high level overview of the project activities.
A UI team was created by Forgejo contributors who have been at work for months on the necessary backports of bug fixes. More ambitious discussions started on the strategies to improve the codebase and the User eXperience. Forgejo needs help to triage. If you ever create a new issue, take a moment of your time to also look at a few others.

Finally found a #FOSS #android #scrobbler that supports saving to a self-hosted service or a local file: https://github.com/kawaiiDango/pano-scrobbler
Many thanks to @youronlyone for pointing me in the right direction. Added their f-droid repo to Droid-ify, and bob's your uncle!
Now I've exported my last.fm #scrobbles thanks to https://github.com/encukou/lastscrape-gui/blob/master/lastexport.py, and I can delete my account. XD

“On the social front, one key feature for #Farcaster is its individual channels for specific topics. So, if you want to liveblog the NBA finals, you can do that in a specific channel with other basketball fans, rather than clogging up your other followers’ feeds (X also supports a Communities feature, which it’s been pushing more heavily to users recently).” - as is @newsmast in the #fediverse.

When I left Twitter, I worried that it would impact my ability to make a living.
That worry was unfounded.
Would I be doing better if I was still on Twitter? Perhaps. But looking at my #ryoms visitors on Kickstarter, it's clear that the fedi is a more than adequate replacement.
