These are the last 5 posts I've bookmarked in Mastodon.
Found this mechanical calculator at a garage sale the other day. Oiled it up, made a replacement for a missing foot, and now it's crunching numbers like it's 1960.
Make computers ding again.
📝 Do you know how these will resolve?

I'd say the most common response to universal basic income is some variant of "it will just increase prices!" In response, I frequently find myself explaining how it's not that simple and there are many variables involved. So here's my summary of 17 of those variables to consider.

Will universal basic income cause inflation? Will the prices of everything rise? I get asked that all the time. Here's the deal about UBI and inflation: it all depends. Can UBI be inflationary? Sure, if we do it in a certain way in a certain context, but no, not in

Thinking about the self-hosting movement, and what I build for myself, vs the crafting industry, and where the boundary for pushing the state of the art vs personal expression vs just recreating the wheel lies.
There's no glory in hacking Apache files yet again, and there are tools for generating HTML, but I want to see a resurgence in exploring the edges of the media, and in personal art and connection vs just forwarding on other's thoughts and memes.
OMG this is so good. 😹
“‘A lot of people think they know how to sharpen pencils, but . . . they don’t really.’ Such is the view of David Rees, a self-styled ‘artisanal pencil-sharpener’ who, at the time of this short film’s release in 2013, had sharpened some 1,500 No 2 pencils for paying customers.”

Documentation for Spacebar: a free open source selfhostable chat, voice and video discord-compatible platformAt the individual scale, self-hosting is not a good way to “be in control of my data.”
It’s like saying I do a vegetable garden to be in control of my food. I need much more than I can grow, it’s an inefficient use of my time, and I’m one bad season away from losing it all.
Resilience and transparency are key to be in control of my data and I can’t achieve this alone. This is a social problem, we need to bring solutions as a society.

Look, Cory, I love you man, but have you considered blogging? 🤔
Wow, that is quite a clever deception to downplay sea-level rise in the DOE climate report.
In response to my last post, a reader asked Please evaluate their Fig. 7.6 graph of the 30 year trailing rate of Battery sea level rise. The author’s comment is that “NOAA’s projection is remarkabl…You have to read the vertical axis label in their graph and understand what “trailing trend” means. StatisticianTamino explains it nicely in his blog.
These folks just have no honest arguments.
